The problem with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is that it is never consistent. It can take many forms and deflect different intensities of pain in different areas of the mouth. No one case of burning mouth syndrome is the same, which is one of the reasons it is so difficult to treat.
Burning mouth syndrome, which affects more females than males, can feature a wide array of symptoms. If you are experiencing any of the following, consult an orofacial pain specialist for help managing your pain:
- Burning sensation in the mouth with no obvious tissue damage or lesions
- Dry mouth
- Metallic taste
- Tinnitus (ear ringing)
- Headaches
- Difficulty swallowing or chewing
BMS is a result of an overstimulated trigeminal nervous system, more commonly known as the chewing system nerve. This overstimulation stems from an abundance of pain signals shooting from multiple sources, which leads to an increased upregulation of the sympathetic system and damaged nerve tissue.
Contact Raleigh Facial Pain Center for Help Managing Burning Mouth Syndrome
Unfortunately for patients suffering from burning mouth syndrome, there is no known cure for the pain -- only management techniques. BMS management begins by trying to pinpoint the area the pain is coming from. If this is not possible, your pain will be treated conservatively, and if that fails to work, our Raleigh orofacial pain specialists will consider the possibility of a more invasive approach to identify and relieve your mouth pain.
If you think you may be suffering from this oral syndrome, please don’t hesitate to contact Raleigh Facial Pain Center. We have experience helping patients manage this mouth pain and we look forward to helping you lead a healthier, pain-free life.
